Can I Travel to (insert country) this Summer or Fall?: A Global Travel Restrictions Guide

Adriana K Smith · Can I Travel To (Insert Country): A Global Travel Restrictions Guide

*Sigh*

This has to be the worst comedy horror show ever to be played out in real life, huh?

And, if things couldn’t get any funnier, the European Union (EU) has banned Americans from traveling to any Schengen Country. Ha! *Sad face* Still, the most popular questions I’ve read and seen have been about:

Looking for getaway spots domestically or internationally

  • Searching for fun places within driving distance
  • Asking about whether it’s safe to travel domestically safely right now
  • And, planning for travel in 2021 and beyond…

We love us some travel, eh?

But, the biggest question beside if it’s safe to travel right now, is Can I travel to (insert country) this Summer or Fall? Well, I’m here to share some Global Travel Restriction resources with you that will help you answer your own question(s).

Can I travel to (Insert Country)?

Kayak has provided a useful travel resource that illustrates which countries around the world are completely closed to reopening very soon.

Regardless if a country is reopening soon or is open to tourists, you have to question their safety and health procedures.

Ask yourself:

  • What precautions has this country taken to prevent the spread of COVID-19?
  • Am I required to quarantine for 14-days?
  • What are the travel restrictions upon arriving at my destination?
  • Will I be required to do temperature checks or self-monitor during my stay?
  • How will my trip be affected by these restrictions and requirements?

Check out Kayak’s Travel Restrictions by Country to explore which nations are off limits and plan whether you can travel to (insert country).

Psst…I’ve partially answered it for you through an IGTV episode:  “Realistically Speaking…Will You Be Able To Travel This Fall.”

Should I be canceling or postponing all travel due to coronavirus?

Yes!

For the love of life, please sit down (of course, if you’re essential staff, then disregard)!!

Ask yourself:

  • What precautions have I taken to prevent the spread of COVID-19?
  • Have I followed all guidance and requirements at home?
  • How will my life be affected not traveling at the moment?

Ever since Memorial Day came and went, US Citizens have gone buckwild in these streets. No masks, no physical distancing, crowding areas and spaces, which have caused many states to see spikes in COVID-19 cases weeks after reopening. *Side-eyeing Florida*

Excuse me if I sound overly cautious (I once wasn’t), but the stakes are too high for us to think about just ourselves. We are in this together. COVID-19 has no problem infecting children, the elderly, black, brown or white people, disabled or not. It doesn’t care!!

If you simply can’t follow guidance in your own country, how can we expect you to follow requirements or restrictions in another country??

Resource: Yale Health

Now, I’m going to backtrack a bit because there are certain groups who need to travel at the moment (i.e. international students).

Some international students and exchange visitors, primarily from China and countries with closed borders, have been unable to return home during the start of the COVID-19 crisis in the U.s. Unfortunately, they’ve had to seek refuge on their university campus, friends or professors’ homes, or shelters due to limited resources to remain in the U.S., while domestic students have been able to return to their home.

Right now, I still have students whose flights are getting canceled due to the limited flights to China. So, there are exceptions to this question and I want you to be mindful that while you may want to travel leisurely, that there are people who need and desire a flight home to reconnect with their family and friends. And, I don’t want to even think about how many have been away from them during personal and familial loss.

Considerations for Travelers Traveling in the COVID-19 age

I can’t tell you what to do, but I can provide resources and information that you can make an informed decisión about traveling to (insert country).

Health and Safety

Check out the CDC’s Consideration for Travelers, which provides guidance to things to consider when booking travel around the world.

Airline Safety

An American Airlines Passenger recently shared his experience and complaint against the airline regarding their lack of sanitary procedures and poor customer service.
